A day of Pilgrimage and Celebration

Saturday 22 May

The day will bring together themes of Pentecost and Creation as we celebrate God’s work in creation and commit ourselves to care for the environment as an expression of our worship.
It will be a day of fun, inspiration and celebration in and around Ashbourne for individuals, church groups and families.  It will appeal to children of all ages.  It will include Cycling, Guided Walks, Family and Children’s Activities and even a Cream Tea!
There will be a seminar about ‘Christian lifestyle and the care of creation’ along with displays and stalls about local and national environmental issues.
The climax of the day will be an act of worship at Ashbourne Parish Church. The day will be led by the Rt Rev’d Alastair Redfern, Bishop of Derby and the key-note speaker will be the Rev’d Dave Bookless, the National Director of A Rocha UK, a leading Christian environmental charity which includes Eco-Congregations.
Here is a great way to begin the Pentecost weekend, with a day out in the Peak District and a picnic!

Nature and Village Tours

National Park Rangers will be providing guided walks and tours from 10.45am-2.30pm for individuals and parish groups free of charge.  The walks will include Wildflowers of the White Peak and the History and Archaeology of Tissington.  Other activities will take place along the cycle ride. There will also be children’s activities; in fact a whole host of activities for all ages.  For locations and times see the back page of this leaflet.

Cycle ride with Bishop Alastair on the Tissington Trail
– free bike hire for first 50 riders to book up

The aim of the cycle ride is to allow people to celebrate God’s creation by experiencing the beauty of the Peak District National Park and to challenge people to “get on their bikes” in conjunction with the Cycle England initiative.

We will leave Ashbourne at 9.30am by coach to Parsley Hay where we collect our cycles for a 13½ mile ride along the Tissington Trail to Ashbourne.

There will be a range of activities along the way for people to get off their bikes, reflect, pray, have a picnic and explore this beautiful countryside. Details of the cycle ride and activities along the way are shown on the map below.

We can accommodate 50 cyclists on this ride. The ride is not a difficult one but is suitable for adults and children 10 years and above.

Environment Seminars and Stalls

From 2.00pm at Ashbourne Parish Church there will be children's activities and stalls to show how we can get involved in practical ways in protecting the environment.  Presenters include A Rocha, Christian Ecology link, Eco-Congregations and Groundwork.  There are also cream teas!  In addition, there will be a seminar by Dave Bookless from 2.15-3.15, and repeated at 3.30-4.30.  Dave is co-founder of A Rocha, a Christian environmental and nature conservation movement.

Dave grew up in India and has been a teacher, debt-collector, vicar, lecturer and barman. He has a national and international speaking and writing ministry.  He is a member of the Church of England’s mission and public affairs council, and moderator of the environmental issues network of Churches Together in Britain & Ireland. He loves wildlife, poetry, small islands, bird-ringing, and seeks with his family to live sustainably in urban Southall.
